The best way to experience the Sugar Hill area is to wander scenic country roads over hill and dale, pausing to enjoy scenic lookouts and valley hamlets. The best place to immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the area is at a real country inn like the Sugar Hill Inn. Nestled into the hillside going out of Franconia on scenic highway 117, the Sugar Hill Inn is a rambling farmhouse built in 1789. Hosting guests since 1929, the Inn embraces guests with old-fashioned hospitality. In late summer and early fall, breezes waft through the windows that look out onto the well-tended lawns and perennial gardens set against beautiful mountain peaks. In the woods behind the inn live moose, deer and black bears, each of whom are apt to stroll across the lawns at any given time of the day. Be sure to keep you eyes out during breakfast or dinner, as these are the most popular times of the day for wildlife viewing. The animals are quite content to ignore camera-toting people, as long as they are given their proper space.
With views of the Franconia Range, Mount Lafayette and Cannon Mountain, the views from the front porch, dining room and most of the guest rooms are stunning, especially during Fall Foliage. The Franconia Notch State Park is less than 10 minutes away and there are backcountry roads offering some of the finest scenery in the state nearby. Antique stores and quaint shops dot the area roads and will keep everyone satisfied during their drive.
