Foliage Report #1

September 4, 2002

The 2002 foliage season is underway! As expected at this early point in the season, there is very little change to report. In many areas, there are a few trees displaying early color. These trees are most likely either young or distressed trees feeling the effects of drought conditions noted in much of the eastern United States. Many people are wondering about the effect the drought will have on the foliage. Trees are quite resilient and usually hold up well to drought conditions. Their extensive root systems help to retain water, thereby coping with a lack of precipitation. If we were to have a number of years of continual drought, the foliage may then be altered. The Foliage Network is expecting a great foliage season, so get ready to view the splendor of autumn! Watch for The Foliage Network reports throughout the fall to keep up to date with the latest foliage conditions.
