1999 Foliage Report #13

October 13, 1999
This year's foliage season, which many had doomed due to the drought experienced throughout the Northeast United States, has turned out to be quite a surprise. Many had called for an early, short-lived foliage season with mostly brown and dulled colors. Numerous Foliage Network spotters have admitted that this year is not among the best, however, the season has held on, even lasting longer than normal in many locations. Colors have been slightly muted, although there are many bright and brilliant displays to be seen. All of this shows how difficult it is to predict the foliage season. This is part of the reason that The Foliage Network was developed.

Peak conditions are now being reported in all of central and northern Maine, most of northern New Hampshire, nearly all of Vermont, the Adirondack and Catskill mountains in New York, and a small area in southeastern Massachusetts. Some sections of northern New Hampshire and northern Vermont are even reporting past peak conditions, although leaves are still on most of the trees. Low color previously reported in a majority of southern New England, northern New Jersey, and in Pennsylvania has been replaced with moderate color. The Mohawk and Hudson Valley regions in New York are also now reporting moderate color. Low color is confined to extreme eastern Massachusetts, coastal sections of Connecticut and New Jersey, Long Island (New York), southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Leaf drop has not changed dramatically, with most areas reporting either low or moderate leaf drop. The exceptions being portions of northern Maine, northern New Hampshire, central Vermont, and southwestern New York which have observed high leaf drop, and coastal New Jersey and extreme southeastern Pennsylvania, where leaf drop continues to be very low.
