October 20, 1999 This weekend may very well be the best for foliage viewing in much of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and parts of New York. Peak conditions can be found throughout much of northern New England, and in sections of New York including the Adirondack and Catskill mountains and in areas in the western portion of the state. The Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts have also rapidly reached peak conditions, as has a small area in southwest Pennsylvania and portions of the Pocono Mountains in northeast Pennsylvania. Elsewhere in the Northeast, moderate color change is the rule, except for central and southern coastal New Jersey and extreme southeast Pennsylvania, where only low change has taken place. By next week, the entire Northeast should have at least moderate color. Past peak conditions are still limited to the mountains of western Maine, northern New Hampshire, and northern and south-central Vermont. Stormy conditions were prevalent during Wednesday and Thursday (October 13 and 14) throughout much of the Northeast. The winds brought down some of the leaves, thereby increasing the amount of leaf drop. Areas in the northern portions of Maine, New Hampshire, and New York are reporting high leaf drop, as are sections of southern Vermont, western New York and an area encompassing the Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York and the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania. However, leaf drop could have been much worse than it was, were it not for the resiliency of the leaves. This may be attributed to the heavy rains in September that gave the leaves better health and more strength after the dry and hot summer. The Foliage Network Report is released twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, during September, October, and portions of November (foliage conditions permitting). This report uses actual data sent in by Foliage Network spotters throughout the Northeast.
