2000 Foliage Report #11

October 7, 2000
Peak foliage has arrived in much of the northern half of Maine, northern New Hampshire, and much of northern Vermont. Sections of central Vermont and portions of the Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York are also reporting peak conditions. Elsewhere in the Northeast, high color (60% - 80% change) is being reported throughout central sections of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont; in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains in northeastern and southeastern New York respectively; in portions of western New York, the higher elevations of the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts, and spotty sections of northeastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey. The only areas still reporting low color are coastal sections in northeastern Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey. Southeastern Pennsylvania and a small region extending from north-central Pennsylvania into the southern tier of New York is also reporting low color.

Windy conditions in the past few days have brought about an increase in leaf drop in some areas. In extreme northern Maine, high leaf drop (60% - 80%) has been observed. Moderate amounts of leaf drop (30% - 60%) have been reported in the northern half of Maine, northern and western New Hampshire, northeastern Vermont, the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains in New York, western New York, and much of central Pennsylvania. All other areas in the Northeast continue to report low leaf drop. Watch for upcoming foliage reports from The Foliage Network to keep up with autumn's spectacular colors!
