November 14, 2001
This, the last report of the 2001 season, features past peak conditions
almost throughout the Northeast. The exceptions being Long Island in New
York, and southeastern New Jersey which are still at peak. The 2001 season
was not what many had predicted. Rather than the quick and dull season
called for by a number of prognosticators, the Northeast experienced a
season of normal duration, with brilliant color. There were however, some
areas which did not display the usual bright hues, but they were far and
few between. One rather anomalous features of the 2001 foliage season
was an abundance of trees which had not yet changed into mid to late October.
This may have resulted from temperatures which fluctuated greatly during
the month of October.
Leaf drop is complete for a
majority of the Northeast. Coastal regions and a portion of western Pennsylvania
have nearly complete leaf loss. The next week should bring down the rest
of the leaves in these locations.
