Foliage Report #6

September 22, 2001
As late September approaches, the amount of change is beginning to increase. About half of the Northeast is now reporting low color, which is 11% - 30% change. Some areas in northern New England and portions of New York State are very close to the next degree of change, moderate color. In many locations, there are patches of trees which are 50% - 75% changed, but overall, the conditions are still in the low and very low color range. Many hillsides are beginning to take on a new, colorful palette. The brown leaves seen on some trees are actually beginning to add to the beauty of the foliage. As the aspen, birch, and elm begin their change to yellow, the mix with brown provides a rich contrast.

Leaf drop is very low to non-existent in much of the Northeast. The major exceptions being the higher elevations where the leaf drop is low. Any leaf drop at this stage is typically attributed to brown, dried out leaves.
