October 26, 2002 The best foliage viewing opportunities can be found in southern Maine, central and southern New Hampshire, lower elevations of Vermont, much of upstate New York, the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts, the Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut, northeastern Connecticut and much of Pennsylvania. All of these areas are reporting mostly high (61 to 80 percent) to peak color. Some areas in PA are still in the moderate (31 to 60 percent) color change. The foliage in much of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island is in the high range, while most of New Jersey is only in the moderate range. Leaf drop is mostly moderate throughout the region with high leaf drop in areas reporting peak to past peak conditions. If you are looking for some scenic drives, check out the following. In Maine: Anywhere along Route 1 along the Atlantic Ocean coastline. In New Hampshire: Route 25 from Plymouth west to Haverhill; Route 11 from Farmington to Glendale; Route 109 from Brookfield to Sandwich; Route 11 from Claremont to Sunapee.
