Foliage Report #13

October 15, 2003

The amount of foliage change has increased dramatically in the past few days. This is most likely attributed to the recent warm, sunny days and crisp nights. Much of the Northeast is experiencing high (61 to 80 percent) to peak (81 to 100 percent) color change. The exceptions, where moderate color is the rule, include portions of southern Pennsylvania, scattered locations in New York State, and most coastal locations. In sections of northern Maine, northern New Hampshire and central Vermont, the peak foliage has passed. For much of New England, now is the time to view the foliage before it is gone! The next few days will bring strong winds for most of the Northeast. This could lead to a significant amount of leaf drop.

If you're looking for foliage in the Northeast, it is hard to miss! If you enjoy the mountains, check out the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains in New York, the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, the Litchfield Hills in northwestern Connecticut and the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania. If lakes are your thing, some great locations include the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire, the many lakes in the Adirondack Mountain area in northern New York and the Finger Lakes Region in western New York. There are also plenty of quaint town to visit and country roads to explore to enjoy the splendor of fall. Get out and enjoy!

Leaf drop is mostly low to moderate except for where the foliage has passed peak. In those areas, the leaf drop is high. We expect the leaf drop to pick up in the coming days due to the strong winds expected to blow through much of the region.
