Foliage Report #9

September 29, 2004

The colors of fall are beginning to "pop" in northern New England, the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains in New York, extreme northwest and west-central New Jersey, and the Pocono Mountains and parts of south-central Pennsylvania. All of these areas have crossed into the moderate color range (31% - 60% change). Some locations are even showing high color (61% - 80% color). They include much of northern Maine, portions of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, the higher elevations of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom and the higher elevations of the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York.

Here are some of the places to visit now for great foliage displays.

Maine - Aroostook County including Caribou, Eagle Lake and Fort Kent. Baxter State Park is also a great destination.

New Hampshire - The White Mountains including the famed Kancamagus Highway (State Route 112), called "The Kanc" by the locals, and Pinkham Notch (near Mt. Washington - the highest peak in the Northeast U.S.). The Presidential Mountains (higher elevations of the White Mountains) are also rapidly gaining color. On clear days, the view from the peaks of these mountains is an absolute kaleidoscope!

Vermont - In the Northeast Kingdom, such places as Danville (U.S. Route 2 just west of St. Johnsbury)
and Greensboro (just off of State Route 16). Killington, in central Vermont, is also showing a lot of color. For those who have not yet made lodging arrangements, I have been told that there are many Bed & Breakfasts and Inns in north-central Vermont with vacancies....act fast as they won't last long!

New York - In the Adirondacks of northern New York, State Route 86 from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake and State Route 28 from Old Forge to Blue Mountain Lake. Many of the lakes that pepper the Adirondacks are also showing great foliage. The Catskills in southeast New York are showing just a bit less color than the Adirondacks.

Leaf drop across the Northeast is mostly low to very low.
