Varying degrees of foliage color can be found throughout the
Northeast. In much of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, western
Massachusetts, much of upstate New York and portions of northern
Pennsylvania, high color (61% - 80% change) to peak color is
in control. Elsewhere, moderate color (31% - 60% change) dominates
with the exception of the greater Boston area, eastern Long
Island in New York, southern New Jersey and extreme southeast
Pennsylvania. In the extreme northern reaches of Maine and New
Hampshire, the foliage is past peak. The same holds true in
the highest elevations of the White Mountains in New Hampshire
and the Green Mountains in Vermont. Keep in mind that this is
only true for the very tops of the high mountains.
Here are some of the places to visit now for great foliage
displays.
Maine - State Route 11 from Ashland south through Millinocket
to Milo. Route 16 from the New Hampshire border east through
Rangeley to Stratton. U.S. Route 201 from Solon north to the
Canadian border. State Route 17 from Oquossoc south to Mexico,
Maine.
New Hampshire - State Route 10 from Littleton south to Hanover.
State Route 25 from Wentworth east to Holderness. From Sunapee,
State Route 103 south to Warner and Rollings State Park.
Vermont - Anywhere along State Route 100 which runs north-south
throughout the state. U.S. Route 5 from Coventry south through
Barton, Lyndonville, St. Johnsbury and Barnet. U.S. Route 7
from Vergennes south through Middlebury, Brandon, Rutland and
Manchester to the Massachusetts border.
New York - In the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York,
State Route 86 from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake; State Route
73 from the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) west to Lake
Placid; State Route 3 from Saranac Lake to Tupper Lake; and
State Route 28 from Old Forge to Blue Mountain Lake. In southeast
New York, State Route 23 through Windham; State Route 30 from
State Route 42 to State Route 17.
Leaf drop in areas where the foliage has reached high to peak
color, and where conditions are now past
peak, leaf drop is high. Elsewhere in the region, leaf drop
is low to moderate.
