Foliage Report #10

October 5, 2005

According to the calendar, October has arrived, although looking at the trees in many parts of the Northeast, you wouldn't believe it. The 2005 foliage season continues to lag behind those of recent years. For the past two weeks, it seems that each time the temperatures start to drop, warm temperatures quickly move in, making it feel like summer again. This is causing some confusion among the trees and is a likely factor in the late foliage change.

Reports of high color (61% - 80%) have finally arrived in northern Maine, extreme northern New Hampshire, and isolated areas in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Other locations in northern New England are reporting moderate color (31% - 60% change). Moderate color can also be found in the Adirondacks in northern New York, portions of western and northern Pennsylvania and in the higher elevations of northern New Jersey. Most other locations in the Northeast are experiencing low color (11% - 30%).

Leaf drop in low to very low throughout the region.
