October 19, 2002 High color (61 to 80 percent) can be found in much of northeastern West Virginia and western Maryland. Peak conditions are limited to the higher elevations of western Maryland. Elsewhere in the region, foliage color is mostly low (11 to 30 percent) to moderate (31 to 60 percent). Leaf drop in most of the region is primarily low, with some areas experiencing moderate to high leaf drop. The moderate and high levels are found in the higher elevations where color change is in the moderate to peak range. There are still plenty of leaves to enjoy! Some suggested scenic drives include the following. In Maryland: Route 219 running north to south in western Maryland; Route 135 from Bloomington, MD to Altamont, MD. In West Virginia: Route 219 from Silver Lake, WV to Elkins, WV; Route 72 from Hambleton, WV to Red Creek, WV; Route 33 from Elkins, WV to Harman, WV. This information provided by Marek D. Rzonca, The Foliage Network. |
