October 8, 2003 Moderate (31 to 60 percent) color continues to spread in the mountains of western Maryland, northeast West Virginia and portions of west-central Virginia. Moderate color is also showing up in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina in the Great Smoky Mountains. This year's foliage change is a bit behind normal, most likely attributed to the abundant rain that has fallen in the region this year. If you have not yet made your leaf-peeping travel plans, now is the time! Check out our Places to Stay and Foliage Spotters sections to find great accommodations! This information provided by Marek D. Rzonca, The Foliage Network. The next report will be released on Sunday, October 12, 2003.
