October 15, 2003 Moderate (31 to 60 percent) color continues to spread in the Southeast with high color (61 to 80 percent) showing up in much of West Virginia, western Maryland and portions of western Virginia. The first reports of peak foliage have arrived from portions of the mountains in northern West Virginia. The famed Skyline Drive in Virginia is beginning to show a rapid increase in fall color. The Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee are getting ready to dazzle leaf peepers with spectacular autumn hues. Leaf drop in areas with high and peak color is now moderate, with plenty of leaves remaining on the trees. Get out and enjoy! If you have not yet made your leaf-peeping travel plans, now is the time! Check out our Places to Stay and Foliage Spotters sections to find great accommodations! This information provided by Marek D. Rzonca, The Foliage Network. The next report will be released on Saturday, October 18, 2003.
