September 22, 2004
More reports have come in from the region and
it appears that much of the damage from the remnants of Hurricane
Ivan was not widespread. There were a number of trees, large
branches and leaves brought down by the storm, but a majority
of the trees and leaves survived. This is great news for the
2004 foliage season.
The mountainous areas along the Appalachian
chain are slowly beginning to show low color (11% - 30% change).
In fact, the higher elevations in eastern West Virginia and
western Maryland have crossed into the moderate color category
(31% - 60% change). Elsewhere, there is little/no color change.
Leaf drop is low to very low throughout the
region.
