The foliage season is well behind that of past years in the region. The same holds true for the Northeast. Both regions experienced a September with temperatures well above normal. It is believed that these unseasonably warm temperatures are a significant factor in the slow onset of fall color.
The foliage change along the Appalachian Mountain chain has reached moderate levels (31% - 60% change), with high color (61% - 80% change) found in much of northern West Virginia. The lower elevations are still reporting low color (11% - 30% change), but expect that to change in the next week or so.
Leaf drop is low in much of the region with moderate leaf drop in areas with high color change.
