September 27, 2006
In contrast to the Northeast, where the 2006 season is about one week ahead of 2005, the Southeast is roughly on the same schedule as last year. The higher elevations in the region are now reporting low color (11% - 30% change), but the coming week should bring out more color. The higher elevations in northeastern West Virginia are very close to 30% change and they should soon cross into the moderate color (31% - 60% change) category. Elsewhere in the region, the color change remains in the 0% -10% range. Leaf drop is not yet a factor as the season is still in the early stages.
