Moderate color (31% - 60% change) is now being reported in the higher elevations of northeastern West Virginia and extreme western Maryland. Elsewhere in the region, color change remains mostly low (11% - 30% change). Many trees to beginning to have that washed-out look, with the green pigments gradually dissipating. The trees know that winter is approaching and the production of chlorophyll (green pigment) is shutting down. As the green disappears, the other pigments (yellows, oranges, reds and browns) will become visible.
