The Northeast Kingdom is Vermont's largest region yet the most sparsely populated, having 10% of the state's population. While the Kingdom is an outdoor person's paradise, it has attractions for the entire family. Historical adventures, maple syrup, and friendly villages and towns in photographic settings. Here one will find soft, rolling hills to rugged mountains, glacial lakes to swift-running rivers, sixteen covered bridges, two topnotch ski mountains (Jay Peak and Burke Mountain), wild life from black bears, deer, and moose to many species of birds including the peregrine falcon. And, of course, the magnificent splendor of fall foliage and in the spring, maple syruping.

It's true, in the Stowe-Smuggler's Notch Region the hills are alive with the sounds of gaiety, not only during Winter's reign but throughout the entire year. In this premier recreation area are the Mount Mansfield (where the first ski chair lift was used in New England in 1940), Smugglers' Notch and Stowe Mountain resorts for all types of winter activities and summer activities including a 2300 foot Alpine Slide, and Gondola rides up Mount Mansfield for breathtaking views of the surrounding locale. There are also 14 covered bridges in the region, more than any other region in Vermont.

The region is also the home of The Old Farmer's Almanac, printed every year since 1792.

The Shires of Vermont region has it all for vacationing, sight-seeing, or just passing through. Mountains, rolling hills meadows, stands of tall maple trees and other hardwood that flash brilliantly during the fall foliage season. World-class skiing and all other winter events-- sleigh riding, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snow boarding, etc. In the other seasons, antique and craft shops, shopping at design company stores and outlets, museums and galleries, swimming, sailing, hiking and biking. And the very New Englandish villages with their vintage village greens and gazebos. Country roads that take you through picture postcard scenic vistas. You have to see it!!!
