Franklin County/Mohawk Trail

Franklin County is basically comprised of rustic, friendly hill towns where you'll find old-time general stores, antique shops, and cozy B&Bs. The Mohawk Trail (Rt2) crosses the northern reaches of the county where land and water activities await.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls displays roses and thousands of other flowers throughout the spring and fall.
  • Yankee Candle Factory in Deerfield is the world's largest candle factory along with its store, restaurant, and Christmas Shop. The Candlemaking Museum, using 200-year old equipment, demonstrates traditional candlemaking. Also, make your own candles is available.

Covered Bridges
  • Burkeville Bridge is located in Conway, MA (Franklin County). This bridge is currently closed. Built in 1870, the bridge spanned the South River. Located alongside State Route 116, just west of Conway.
  • Pumping Station Bridge is located in Greenfield, MA (Franklin County). This bridge is currently closed. Built in 1950, the bridge spanned Mill Brook. Located alongside State Route 8A, about 1/2 mile north of State Route 8A junction with State Route 2 in Charlemont.
  • Arthur Smith Bridge is located in Colrain, MA (Franklin County). This bridge is currently closed. Built in 1870 and once spanning the North River, this bridge is now on dry land. Located 1.2 miles southwest of Colrain, MA on State Route 112, then right 0.1 miles on Lyonville Road.
  • Bissell Bridge is located in Charlemont, MA (Franklin County). This bridge is currently closed. Built in 1951. Spans the Mill Brook. Located alongside State Route 8A about 1/2 mile north of 8A junction with State Route 2 in Charlemont.

Historic Sites
  • The Hail to the Sunrise Statue on Rt 2 in Charlemont commemorates the Mohawk Trail's Native American origin.

Locations
  • Historic Deerfield, whose mile-long street is lined with 18th and 19th century houses filled with period furnishings, ceramics, and silver.
  • The Old Greenfield Village in Greenfield comprises of turn-of-the-century antique shops.
