Aroostook County

The Aroostook Region, the northernmost region in Maine, is full of natural, cultural, and recreational resources. "The County", as it is locally referred to, offers 2,000 lakes, rivers, and streams for canoeing and fishing. During the winter, enjoy cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the vast countryside.

Things to See and Do

Covered Bridges

  • Watson Settlement Bridge - Littleton, Maine - Built in 1911.

Parks & Trails

  • Aroostook State Park - Visit this 600 acre park and discover the North Maine Woods and the Allagash Wildnerness Waterway. The park is located near Presque Isle, Maine and is open all year.
  • Deboullie Public Reserved Land - Route 161, St. Francis - Enjoy 22,000 acres of ponds, hiking trails, campsites, and low rugged mountains.

Scenic Drives

  • Route 11 between Fork Kent and Portage Lake. The 37 mile route offers spectacular views of grasslands, meadows, lakes, rivers, and of course, fall foliage colors.
  • Route 1, south of Houlton to the Danforth-Weston line. This 8 mile scenic byway provides for great views of the Western Mountain Region of New Brunswick and Grand Lake.

Science & Nature Related

  • A.E. Howell Wildlife Conservation Center - The center rehabilitates injured or orphaned wildlife and teaches children and adults about wildlife conservation, natural resource management, and environmental conservation. Appointments required.
