Kennebec & Moose River Valleys

This region is most noted for its outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and many winter activities. Among some of the more noted attractions are the Maine State Museum, historic Ft. Western, the Moose River, and the Kennebec River.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • The Forks, one of the foremost whitewater rafting area in eastern North America near the headwaters of the Kennebec river.
  • Two-Cent Bridge in Waterville, last known toll footbridge in America.

Historic Sites
  • Fairfield History House in Fairfield - 1900 Queen Anne furnished with Victorian furniture and displaying artifacts of that era.
  • Old Fort Western across the bridge in Augusta; built in 1754 and was used as the staging area for Benedict Arnold's ill-fated attempt to capture Quebec in 1775. Oldest surviving wooden fort building in New England. Ft. Western is a National Historic Landmark.

Locations
  • Belgrade Lakes Region, a chain of seven island-dotted lakes providing all-season activities including fishing, boating, golf, hiking, shopping and dining.
  • Hallowell, the state's smallest city but boasting of a National Historic District downtown which is one of Maine's major antique centers with antique shops, boutiques, and historic houses, all perfect for browsing and shopping.

Museums
  • Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville - Featuring American Art.
  • Maine State Museum in Augusta - See exhibits including Maine's natural environment, prehistory, social history, and manufacturing heritage.
  • Remington Museum in Waterville - Presenting five period rooms and adjoining apothecary (1814), also Civil War memorabilia.

Outdoor Activities

Parks & Trails
  • Capitol Park in Augusta has over 70 species of native trees and more than 20 species of exotic trees.
  • Kennebec Valley Trail - 14 miles of spectacular views passing through Embden, Solon and Bingham.
  • Lake George Regional Park in Canaan - Swimming, boating, picnicking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
  • Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta - A 224 acre arboretum where one can walk among more than 600 trees and shrubs.

Scenic Drives
  • Old Canada Road Scenic Byway - This 78 mile route begins on State Route 201 where State Route 43 meets State Route 201 and terminates at the Canadian border. The southern portion of this route is dominated by rivers, while the northern section is predominantly forested.
