The Maine Highlands

The Maine Highlands region is chock full of attractions and activities. This region is home to the 200,000 acre Baxter State Park, Moosehead Lake (the largest lake in the Northeast), and Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine. Enjoy boating, camping, hiking and for you snow enthusiasts, take advantage of snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing in this versatile region of Maine!

Things to See and Do

Covered Bridges
  • Lowes Bridge in Guilford-Sangerville. Build in 1857, it was washed away by the flood of April 1, 1987. A modern covered bridge, patterned after the original was built in 1990. The bridge crosses the Piscataquis River and is located just off State Route 15 south of Guilford Village.

Museums
  • Maine Discovery Museum - Visit the largest interactive children's museum north of Boston. Conveniently located off of I-95.

Outdoor Activities

Parks & Trails
  • Baxter State Park - Enjoy over 200,000 acres of wilderness, including Mt. Katahdin, Maine's highest peak.
  • Lagrange - Medford Trail runs 12 miles from South Lagrange to Medford Center. Enjoy beautiful scenery of forests and farmland. Open all year.
  • Lily Bay State Park on Moosehead Lake. Explore the 925-acre park and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage. If you enjoy wildlife, you will want to visit this park for sure!

Scenic Drives
  • Route 11 from Milo to Millinocket. Enjoy this 40 mile drive which will take you by many lakes and offer many opportunities to take some fantastic fall foliage pictures.
