Lakes Region

Aptly named, the Lakes Region of New Hampshire features 273 lakes and ponds, highlighted by the 72 square mile Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest in the state. There are many activities to participate in, from swimming and fishing, to waterparks and boat tours. Just imagine how stunning the foliage must look against a lake backdrop!

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Polar Caves - Explore caves, nature trails, maple sugar museum, and a glacial boulder maze. You can also relax in the picnic area and shop at your choice of two gift shops.

Covered Bridges
  • Squam Bridge is located in Ashland, NH (Grafton County). Built in 1990 and spans the Squam River. Located on River Street.
  • Sulphite Bridge is located in Franklin, NH (Belknap County). This bridge was built in 1896 and spans the Winnipesaukee River. Located on the Boston and Maine Railroad line.
  • Whittier Bridge is located in Ossipee, NH (Carroll County). Built in the 1870s. This bridge spans the Bearcamp River and is located west of State Route 16 at West Ossipee Village on old State Route 125.
  • Smith Bridge is located in Plymouth, NH (Grafton County). This bridge, built in 1850, spans the Baker River. Located 1/2 mile north of State Route 3A, 2-1/2 miles west of Plymouth Village on Smith Bridge Road.
  • Durgin Bridge is located in Sandwich, NH (Carroll County). Built in 1869, this bridge spans the Cold River. Located 1-1/2 miles north of State Route 113, 2 miles east of North Sandwich Village on Durgin Road.

Outdoor Activities

Parks & Trails
  • Cardigan State Park - This 5,655 acre park features a mountain road leading to a picnic area and trails on the west slope of Mount Cardigan.
  • Castle in the Clouds on the Castle Spring Estate in Moultonborough - The estate is comprised of more than 5,200 acres of the Ossipee Mountains, looking down on Lake Winnipesaukee. Enjoy hikes on well-marked mountain trails or picnic at many scenic locations. Visit the Castle Springs natural spring water bottling plant and enjoy a taste of pure spring water.
  • White Lake State Park - This 140 acre park is situated on White Lake. While fall is too cool for swimming, you can still enjoy the foliage reflections in the lake and take a stroll around the lake.

Scenic Drives
  • Branch River Valley Trail - This 13 mile route travels along Routes 16, 125, 153 and other local roads from Milton to Wakefield.
  • Lakes Region Tour - This route will take you around Lake Winnipesaukee and sometimes follows lots of tiny little jogs of roads. As a guide, follow the following cities starting in Alton: Alton Bay, Gilford, Weirs Beach, Meredith, Holderness, Center Harbor, Moultonborough. The route ends back in Alton. In addition, there are also Scenic Byway signs which will guide you. 97 miles.
  • Route 140 from Alton to Belmont.
