Monadnock Region

The Monadnock Region, known for its quaint villages, rolling farmlands, and historic mills, give this region a quintessential "New England" look and feel. Stay at historic Inns, visit maple sugar houses and apple orchards, or climb Mount Monadnock to catch a glimpse of the surrounding foliage.

The region is also the home of The Old Farmer's Almanac, printed every year since 1792.

Things to See and Do

Covered Bridges
  • County Bridge is located between Hancock and Greenfield, NH (Hillsborough County). Built in 1937 and crosses the Contoocook River. Located one mile east of US Route 202, 3-1/2 miles west of Greenfield on Hancock-Greenfield (Forest) Road.
  • Carleton Bridge is located in Swanzey, NH (Cheshire County). This bridge, built in 1789 (rebuilt in 1869), spans the South Branch Ashuelot River. Located east of State Route 32 on Carleton Road.
  • Sawyer's Crossing is located in Swanzey, NH (Cheshire County). Built in 1859 (replaces original built in 1771) and spans the Ashuelot River. Located one mile north of State Route 32 on Sawyer's Crossing Road.
  • Slate Bridge is located in Swanzey, NH (Cheshire County). Built in 1862, spans the Ashuelot River. Located east of State Route 10 on Westport Village Road.
  • West Swanzey Bridge is located in Swanzey, NH (Cheshire County). This bridge, built in 1832, spans the Ashuelot River. Located east of State Route 10 on Main Street.
  • Ashuelot Bridge is located in Winchester, NH (Cheshire County). This bridge, built in 1864, spans the Ashuelot River. Located south of State Route 119 in the Upper Village of Ashuelot on Bolton Road.
  • Coombs Bridge is located in Winchester, NH (Cheshire County). Built in 1837. Spans the Ashuelot River and is located west of State Route 10, 1/2 mile southwest of Westport Village on Old Westport Road.

Outdoor Activities

Parks & Trails
  • Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area in Chesterfield - This 13 acre area features footpaths along a gorge with scenic views.
  • Miller State Park in Peterborough - This, the oldest state park in New Hampshire, is known for its hiking and picnicking. Miller State Park extends to the top of Pack Monadnock (2,290 feet).
  • Monadnock State Park in Jaffrey - A 100 mile view to all six New England states awaits you atop the 3,165 foot Mt. Monadnock. There are 40 miles of clearly marked foot trails for an enjoyable foliage hike.
  • Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam - Named for the 16 acre grove of Rhododendron plants (the largest in northern New England), the last blooms in the fall are a great compliment to the brilliant foliage in the forest.

Scenic Drives
  • Route 119 from West Rindge to Winchester.
  • Route 202 from Hillsborough to West Rindge.
  • Route 123 from Hancock to Marlow.
  • Route 101, Keene to Temple Mountain.
  • Route 124 from Marlborough to Jaffrey.
