First settled in 1623, the Seacoast Region offers many activities. Take a scenic bike ride along the coastline, or maybe enjoy a relaxing harbor cruise. There are also many historic sites to visit.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Cochecho River Tours & Cruises in Dover - Offers daily public tours of the Cochecho and Piscataqua Rivers, along with the waters of Great Bay.
  • Isles of Shoals Steamship Company - Enjoy various cruises, from whale watching and lighthouse cruises to relaxing evening excursions.
  • Portsmouth Brewery in Portsmouth - New Hampshire's original brewpub, offering great food and beer since 1991.
  • Portsmouth Harbor Cruises - Offering a variety of cruises, including harbor tours and inland river excursions which are very popular for viewing fall foliage.
Historic Sites
  • Fort Constitution Historic Site in New Castle - Located on the northeast corner of New Castle Island. One of seven forts built to protect Portsmouth Harbor.
  • Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Historic Site in Portsmouth - Former home of New Hampshire's first royal governor, Benning Wentworth. The 40-room mansion is one of the most outstanding homes remaining from the colonial era. Limited hours during foliage season.
Museums
  • Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth - Experience life from the late 1600s to the 1950s in this, the oldest seacoast neighborhood in New Hampshire.
  • The Children's Museum of Portsmouth - Hands-on arts and sciences museum offering exhibits, daily art and science activities, family programs and workshops.
Parks & Trails
  • The Portsmouth Harbour Trail - The trail passes more than 70 points of significance in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
  • Odiorne Point State Park in Odiorne - Enjoy hiking, biking, fishing and nature walks in this park which has sweeping views of the ocean and rocky shoreline.
Science & Nature Related
  • Seacoast Science Center - The Center is situated on 330 acres, on which you can view seven coastal habitats, or visit the many trails and the picnic area.
Scenic Drives
  • American Independence Byway - This scenic byway begins by going west on State Route 101E. Turn north on State Route 27 into Hampton. Continue on State Route 27 to State Route 108, which takes you south of Exeter. Head east on State Route 150 and join State Route 84 (soon after Kensington). Take US Route 1 north to the end of the byway (when you hit State Route 101E). 21 miles.
  • Coastal Byway - The north end of this 18 mile byway starts in Portsmouth. From here, head south on State Route 1A until you reach the terminus at State Route 286.
  • State Route 151 from Greenland to North Hampton
