The Adirondacks

The Adirondack Region is a potpourri of rugged, wild adventure in mountain climbing, whitewater rafting, winter activities and rustic camping to quiet respites in a lake shore cabin listening to the loons, fishing, swimming, boating, and easy nature walks. There is also American history and Olympic history. The Adirondack State Park stretches over 6-million acres with 46 peaks more than 4,000-feet high, more than 2,000 lakes and ponds, thousands of miles of rivers and streams, ideal summer temperatures, low in winter, heavy snowfall, and breathtakingly spectacular fall foliage viewing wherever you may find yourself in the region. Quaint villages and towns displaying a wildlife atmosphere and relaxed attitude. Great family fare at water-slide amusement parks, scenic railroad rides and lake cruises, and a lasting, learning experience for youngsters in the great outdoors region.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Adirondack Scenic Railroad provides a 30-minute scenic rail ride between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid and a hour-long or day-long scenic ride between Utica and Old Forge. Fall foliage gem!!
  • Santa's Workshop north of Wilmington; visit Santa Claus, live reindeer, craft shops children's rides and storybook characters.
  • Whiteface Mountain Ski Center and Gondola in Wilmington. Gondola/lift rides available summer through fall. Great downhill skiing. Site of winter Olympic Alpine competition.

Historic Sites
  • Crown Point State Historic Site in Crown Point; preserved ruins of two forts occupied, during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War- French Fort St. Frederic and British Fort Crown Point. Orientation film, tours.
  • Fort Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga; major victories in the 7-Year War and Revolutionary War. Reenactments of historical events, museum shop, restaurant, picnic area.

Locations
  • Whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and fly fishing abound at locations as Chestertown, Keene, Indian Lake, Lake George, Lake Luzerne, Lake Placid, and Old Forge.

Museums
  • Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake is situated on 32 acres overlooking Blue Mountain Lake and has 20 indoor/outdoor exhibits on the Adirondacks from the 1800's to the present. Museum store and food available.
  • Fort William Henry Museum in Lake George was the subject of James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans". Fort artifacts, cannon and musket firing, musketball molding demonstrations. Tours.
  • Hyde Collection Art Museum in Glens Falls; displays of art from the 4th-century B.C. to the present in a furnished Florentine Renaissance mansion. Works of Raphael, da Vinci, Ruebens, Rembrandt, Renoir, and Picasso.
  • Lake Placid 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Museum features the 1932 and 1980 games. Video presentation, athlete's uniforms and equipment, and a model of an Olympic complex.
  • Penfield Museum in Crown Point is a historical complex of 19th-century buildings on more than 500-acres in the Ironville Historic District. Listed on the National Register as the "Birthplace of the Electric Age" being the first industrial operation using electricity.
  • Robert Lewis Stevenson Memorial Cottage in Saranac Lake was the author's home during the winter of 1887-1888. Museum features original furniture and is purported to hold the world's largest collection of the author's memorabilia.

Parks & Trails
  • Adirondack Park a 6-million acre area encompassing private and state land. Nearly half is wilderness. Rugged mountains to beaver meadows. All sorts of summer and winter recreational activities.
  • High Falls Gorge in Wilmington is deep ravine with spectacular waterfalls along the base of Whiteface Mountain. Well-built bridges and groomed paths. Picnicking, gift shop.
  • Point Au Roche State Park in Plattsburg combines cleared and forested areas. Beach, boating, fishing, nature trails for hiking and biking. Picnicking and concession stand.

Scenic Rides/Drives
  • Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway at Lake George(Rt9), a 5.5 mile scenic drive providing 100-mile view of the Adirondacks and Lake George. Summit reached by auto or hiking trail. Picnicking.
  • Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway in Wilmington is a 6-mile paved road leading up to a parking area near the mountain's summit. Panoramic view of the Adirondack High Peaks, St. Lawrence River, and Champlain and Placid Lakes. Toll road
