Central Vermont

The Central Vermont Region is a relaxed area of what one thinks Vermont is all about. It is New England and America the way things used to be. It is rich in history and culture. Central Vermont is listed as a Historic Travel Itinerary in the National Register of Historical Places, one of six such places designated in the U.S. Visitors are most welcomed to enjoy tranquility and beauty. Attractions
  • Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury; Take the factory tour to view ice cream making at its very best. Samples. Great fun for all.
  • Bridge Street Marketplace in Waitsfield Village; a restored block of five historic buildings (circa 1800's), providing unique shopping, factory outlets, wooden bridge, riverside restaurant.
  • Cabot Creamery in Cabot is a dairy farmers cooperative. Award-winning cheddar cheeses. See the process, enjoy some samplings.
  • Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury is reputed as New England's most famous cider mill. Watch apples go in and cider come out. Store sells cider, apple jelly, apple butters, apple sauce, cheese, smoked meats, and maple products. Crafts and gifts. Mail order available.
  • Morse Farm Sugar Works in Montpelier; the Morses are Vermont's oldest maple sugaring family producing maple products for 200 years. See the production of maple delicacies. Maple trails, tours, tastings. Gifts and shipping worldwide.
  • New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier. Interested in interesting dining? Visit Main Street Grill & Bar, Chef's Table, and La Brioche Bakery & Cafe all featuring the Institute's innovative fare.
  • Rock of Ages Quarry in Barre is the largest granite quarry in the world. The quarry floor is almost 500 feet down sheer rock walls. Tours, self or guided, video, exhibits, gifts.

Covered Bridges
  • Coburn or Cemetery covered bridge is located in East Montpelier, VT (Washington County). Built in 1851. Spans the Winooski River on Coburn Bridge Road.
  • Moseley covered bridge is located in Northfield, VT (Washington County). Built in 1899. Spans Stony Brook on Brook Road, a mile west of Route 12A.
  • Slaughter House covered bridge is located in Northfield, VT (Washington County). This bridge, built in c. 1872, spans Dog River on Bailey Street in Northfield Falls.
  • Second, Newell or Lower Cox Brook covered bridge is located in Northfield, VT (Washington County). Built c. 1872. Spans Cox Brook on Cox Brook Road, west of Route 12 in Northfield Falls.
  • Station covered bridge is located in Northfield, VT (Washington County). This bridge, built in c. 1872, spans the Dog River on Cox Brook Road, off Route 12 in Northfield Falls.
  • Third or Upper Cox Brook covered bridge is located in Northfield, VT (Washington County). Built in c. 1872, this bridge spans Cox Brook on Cox Brook Road, west of Route 12 in Northfield Falls.
  • Pine Brook or Wilder covered bridge is located in Waitsfield, VT (Washington County). Built in c. 1872. The bridge spans Pine Brook on North Brook Road.
  • Village or Big Eddy covered bridge is located in Waitsfield, VT (Washington County). Built in 1833, this bridge spans the Mad River, east of Waitsfield off Route 100.
  • Warren covered bridge is located in Warren, VT (Washington County). This bridge, built in 1880, spans the Mad River east off Route 100 (north of Warren).

Museums
  • Camp Meade Military Museum in Middlesex. There are 25 indoor/outdoor exhibits depicting life in America during the Great Depression, and World War II exhibits.
  • USS Montpelier Museum in Montpelier exhibits ships and their history maintaining town's naval tradition. Admiral George Dewey was born in Montpelier and Montpelier has been a sea town without an ocean since the 1800s.
  • Vermont State House in Montpelier (country's smallest state capitol). Tours available summer and fall.

Parks & Trails
  • Hubbard Park & Tower in Montpelier; a few blocks from the capitol a 180 acre wooded park. Tower is a 50-foot stone observation structure overlooking the town and countryside. Picnicking and nature walks.
