Crossroads of Vermont

The Crossroads of Vermont has the many offerings of the state's second largest city and the privacy and quietude of the peaceful towns and villages. Vermont's second largest mall is in Rutland providing shopping for all of one's needs. Four-season activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, sailing, swimming, water skiing, fishing, and best in the East downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing at Killington and Pico Peak ski resorts. The terrain of the region is wooded for spectacular fall foliage viewing.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Fred's Dollhouse & Miniature Center in Pittsford; internationally acclaimed doll house enterprise. Specializing in doll houses and custom building, to-scale building and electrical supplies, fixtures, hardware, wallpaper,etc.
  • Vermont Marble Exhibit in Proctor; a 160-foot mural depicts earth's geological history and evolution, planetary relationships, volcanic eruptions, and cave environments. Marble room, history of marble, sculptors at work. Gift shop.
  • Wilson Castle in Proctor; a mid-19th century masterpiece on an 115 acre estate. European and Far-Eastern furnishings. Tours.

Covered Bridges
  • Depot covered bridge is located in Brandon, VT (Rutland County). This bridge, built in 1840, spans Otter Creek on Florence Road (off Route 7).
  • Sanderson or Lower covered bridge is located in Brandon, VT (Rutland County). Built in 1838, spans Otter Creek on Pearl Street.
  • Kingsley or Mill River covered bridge is located in Clarendon, VT (Rutland County). Built c. 1838. Spans the Mill River.
  • Cooley covered bridge is located in Pittsford, VT (Rutland County). This bridge, built in 1849, spans Furnace Brook on Elm Street.
  • Hammond covered bridge is located in Pittsford, VT (Rutland County). Built in 1843. Spans Otter Creek on Florence Road, west of Route 7.
  • Gorham or Goodnough covered bridge is located in Pittsford, VT (Rutland County). This bridge, built in 1841, spans Otter Creek on Old Pittsford-Proctor Road.
  • Twin Bridge covered bridge is located in Rutland Town, VT (Rutland County). Built in 1850. No longer spans any body of water. At one time, spanned the East Creek.
  • Brown covered bridge is located in Shrewsbury, VT (Rutland County). This bridge, built in 1880, spans Cold River on Upper Cold River Road.

Historic Sites
  • The Hubbardton Battlefield in East Hubbardton; the site includes a Visitor Center and museum detailing the only Revolutionary War battle on Vermont soil between the outnumbered Green Mountain Boys and the British. Walking tours of the battlefield.

  • The Killington Adventure Center in Killington; in summer, waterslide, skate board and in-line skating park, alpine slide, 45 miles of hiking and biking trails, gondola ride and in the winter, best winter activities for the entire family. Antique and arts and crafts shops, fine dining.
