Mid Vermont for all Seasons

The Mid Vermont for All Seasons Region has a varied landscape from the easterly Green Mountains where hiking and ski trails and forest land abound to the dairy farms and agricultural fields sloping down to Lake Champlain. Numerous museums, historic sites and covered bridges dot the region. Recreational activities are available year-round here- boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, downhill and cross-country skiing, nature trails, and bird watching. Whatever you are looking for during vacation, you'll find it here.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Robert Comptom Pottery in Bristol; clay work by Robert and weaving by his wife are featured. Clay fountains, aquariums, and all sorts of pottery.
  • Dakin Farm in Ferrisburg; second Vermont location of this popular farm. Vermont's best tasting cob-smoked ham, maple syrup, cheeses. Samples offered.
  • Factory Marketplace at Kennedy Brothers is Vergennes; antiques and locally made crafts, a children's sculpture garden, RR station.
  • Ferriburg Artisan Guild; gallery and gift shop showing arts and crafts by 175 Vermont artists. Education center, studios of working artists, 16 acre complex including 4 historic buildings, covered bridge.

Covered Bridges
  • Station (or Salisbury Station) covered bridge is located in Cornwall, VT (Addison County). Built in 1856 and spans Otter Creek. Located on Creek Road, 4 miles west of Route 7.
  • Pulpmill covered bridge is located in Middlebury, VT (Addison County). The bridge was built sometime between 1808 and 1820 and crossed Otter Creek.
  • Halpin covered bridge is located in Middlebury, VT (Addison County) off of Halpin Road. The bridge was built c.1824 and traverses Muddy Branch.
  • The Rutland Railroad covered bridge is located in Shoreham, VT (Addison County) and is one of three remaining railroad covered bridges in the state (the tracks however, have been removed). The bridge was built in 1897 and crosses the Lemon Fair River. Located off of Route 22A on East Shoreham Road.

Historic Sites
  • Chimney Point State Historic Site in Addison; an 18th century tavern now exhibiting Native American and French influences from the earliest settlement times to the present.
  • Mount Independence in Orwell; exhibits and period artifacts interpreting life of the Revolutionary War soldier stationed at the Mount Independence Fort site in 1776-1777.
  • UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge; world-renowned breeding farm for Morgan horses. Working farm with over 60 Morgan horses. Guided stable tours, gift shop. National Historic Site.

Museums
  • Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History in Middlebury; built in 1829 as a marble merchant's home, now exhibits Vermont furniture, art, tools, and household items. History exhibits. Museum shop. Research center.
  • Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes; features archaeology lab and exhibits, kids Merriment Playground. Largest collection of wooded shipwrecks in America.
  • Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburg; a 90 acre historic site and National Historic Landmark for the Underground Railroad in Vermont. Tours of the fully furnished period house and 8 historic buildings.

Parks & Trails
  • Kings Land Bay State Park in Ferrisburg; a 264 acre park along Lake Champlain's shoreline remains mostly in its natural condition. Picnicking, sailing, boating, swimming, and fishing.
