Southern Vermont

The Southern Vermont Region contains may historic villages and towns. The rural landscape consists of forests and rolling hills from the Connecticut River to the Green Mountains. One will experience natural beauty and outdoor adventure, history and heritage, and friendly people enjoying a laid-back style of living. Hiking and mountain biking trails abound. Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Adams Farm in Wilmington; the farm has been in continuous operation since 1851 producing agricultural products. Maple syrup, garden produce, hand-spun woolens, and fine needle work. Store.
  • Basketville Outlet in Putney; one of the largest basket emporiums. Huge variety of of shapes and sizes to fit everyone's needs.
  • North River Winery in Jacksonville; award winning wines from the oldest winery in Vermont. An 1850's farmstead houses the company. Tasting and sales offered. Free tours.
  • Vermont Artisan Designs in Brattleboro; exhibits of more than 350 crafts personnel in jewelry, pottery, blown glass, wrought iron, pewter, and wood and fiber items.

Covered Bridge
  • Creamery covered bridge is located in Brattleboro, VT (Windham County). This bridge, built in 1879, spans Whetstone Brook on Guilford Street, leaving Route 9.
  • West Dummerston covered bridge is located in Dummerston, VT (Windham County). Built in 1872, this bridge spans the West River adjacent to Route 30. This is the longest covered bridge in Vermont.
  • Kidder Hill covered bridge is located in Grafton, VT (Windham County). Built in 1870. This bridge spans the South Branch of the Saxtons River, south of Route 121.
  • Green River covered bridge is located in Guilford, VT (Windham County). This bridge, built in 1870, spans the Green River.
  • Williamsville covered bridge is located in Newfane, VT (Windham County). Built in 1870, this bridge spans Stony Brook.
  • Hall, Barber Park or Osgood covered bridge is located in Rockingham, VT (Windham County). This bridge, built c. 1870, spans Saxtons River on Paradise Hill Road.
  • Bartonsville covered bridge is located in Rockingham, VT (Windham County). Built in 1870. Spans the Williams River, 1/2 mile north of Route 103.
  • Victorian covered bridge is located in Rockingham, VT (Windham County). Built in 1868, this bridge spans the Williams River and is located 4.5 miles southeast of the junction of Route 11 and Route 103 in Chester.
  • Worralls covered bridge is located in Rockingham, VT (Windham County). This bridge, built in 1868, spans the Williams River, north side of Route 103 (~ 5 miles SE of Chester).
  • Scott covered bridge is located in Townshend, VT (Windham County). Built in 1870. The bridge spans the West River. Adjacent to Route 30, 1.5 miles west of Townshend Village.
  • Twin Silos or High Mowing Farm covered bridge is located in Wilmington, VT (Windham County). Built in 1949. Spans a tributary of the Deerfield River.

Locations
  • Historic Grafton Village; a carefully restored 19th century village, one of the finest example of rural New England architecture. Self guided tours. A working blacksmith shop, antique shops, museums, cheddar cheese company, dining, and general stores.

Museums
  • Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in Brattleboro; Housed in the Union Station, a landmark building on the Register of Historic Places. Frequently changing themes and programs reflecting historic or cultural events.
  • Southern Vermont Natural History Museum in Marlboro; small but fascinating, this museum of natural history. One of the largest collection of mounted New England birds, over 500 birds in 80 dioramas.
  • The Nature Museum at Grafton; exhibits designed for curiosity and understanding nature's environments- fossils, birds, mammals, minerals,and botany. Walking trails and self guided nature trails.

Outdoor Activities
  • Haystack Mountain and Mount Snow Ski Areas; few miles north of Wilmington. All seasons fun for the entire family. Hiking, biking, skiing.
  • Stratton Mountain; four-season playground for family fun. Summer activities and winter fun.
