Stowe/Smuggler's Notch |
It's true,
in the Stowe-Smuggler's Notch Region the hills are alive with
the sounds of gaiety, not only during Winter's reign but throughout
the entire year. In this premier recreation area are the Mount
Mansfield (where the first ski chair lift was used in New England in 1940),
Smugglers' Notch and Stowe Mountain resorts for all types of
winter activities and summer activities including a 2300 foot
Alpine Slide, and Gondola rides up Mount Mansfield for breathtaking
views of the surrounding locale. There are also 14 covered bridges
in the region, more than any other region in Vermont.

Smugglers'
Notch State Park at Mount Mansfield has a namesake's history.
When President Jefferson enacted forbidding trade with Canada,
Vermonters smuggled goods through the narrow mountain pass.
Later, the Notch was an escape passageway for slaves, and
later for liquor smuggling during Prohibition. Now, although
the hike through the pass is sometimes challenging, the accomplishment
and the majestic view is worth the effort. The cold moist
atmosphere is home to alpine species of plants found nowhere
else in Vermont. Miles of hiking trails, camping sites, rest
rooms await the adventurer.
