Central Region

The Central Delaware Region is home to the state's capitol, an Air Force Base, a horse race track and NASCAR racing, a national wildlife refuge, quiet historic towns and villages, pleasant countryside dotted with Amish farms and an easy and exciting vacationland one should navigate at a leisurely pace so as not to miss anything. The capital city of Dover is a charming city with flower-filled parks and historic importance. Here there is something for everyone. Take your time and you will be entertained in all that you do and see.

Things to See and Do

Historic Sites
  • Golden Fleece Tavern (marker) in Dover - Site of Delaware's ratification of the U.S. Constitution making Delaware the "First State" of this nation.
  • The Green in Dover - Designed by William Penn and developed in 1717. Ratification of the Constitution was voted upon here (see above), a regiment was established during the Revolution.
  • John Dickinson's Plantation in Dover - The boyhood home of the man who was attributed with writing the Articles of Confederation in 1778. The mansion was built in the 1740's and the reconstructed farm structures and slave quarters provide a glimpse of life at that time.

Museum
  • Air Mobility Command Museum in Dover - Features a collection of vintage aircraft and artifacts from WWII. Museum store and guided tours.
  • Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover - Displays Sewell C. Biggs' art and antique collection spanning more than 200 years of American artistry. Also included within the 14 galleries are examples of Colonial furniture, silver, china and tall clocks. Programs and family activities.
  • Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village in Dover - Maintains Delaware's agricultural heritage and rural life through farm equipment and farming implements dating back to 1670 and buildings from the Civil War era.
  • Johnson's Victrola Museum in Dover - Displays Eldridge Reeves Johnson's inventions and memorabilia including Victrolas, talking machines, early records and photographs.

Science & Nature Related
  • Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge between Leipsic and Smyrna - Serves as a refuge for migrating geese, ducks and shorebirds. Nature trails to view local wildlife year-round and a 12-mile driving route. The Allee House, a 1753 Queen Anne brick plantation house with period furniture and furnishings, sits within this 15,918-acre refuge.
