Mountain Lakes

As the name implies, this region has mountains and five major lakes comprising more than 8,400 acres for great water activities. The region has 60,000 acres of wildlife management providing an excellent opportunity to view nature and its wildlife occupants. The region is rich in Civil War History. Antiques and hand crafts abound. While the region is rural, there are ample things to see and do. While mostly geared for outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting, river, pond and lake fishing and camping, one can still relax in the homespun atmosphere the region projects. Take scenic rides or walk around the towns and villages with their quaint shops and meet some real nice people. So, come and stay awhile--you will enjoy yourself.

Things to See and Do

Attractions
  • Kirkwood Winery in Summersville - Country store with grape and fruit wines. Winery tours. Home of Grape Stomping Wine Festival in the third week in September.
  • Glassworks of West Virginia in Weston - Manufacturers of homemade, mouth-blown glassware since 1926. Gift shop. Tours and outlet store.

Covered Bridges
  • Walkersville covered bridge located near Walkersville, WV (Lewis County). This bridge was built in 1903 and spans the the West Fork River. From Walkersville, take US Route 19 south for 1 mile.

Historic Sites
  • Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park in Summersville - A 156-acre site where an important Civil War engagement was fought on September 10, 1861. The park museum exhibits Civil War artifacts and memorabilia from the battle. A two-mile trail loops around the park.
  • Jackson's Mill Historic Area in Weston - A 5-acre site of General Stonewall Jackson's boyhood home. Consists of a 1700's log cabin with period furnishings, an 1800's cabin that serves as the visitor center, a museum, restored grist mill, and 19th-century buildings filled with antique tools and artifacts, including a 75-gallon apple-butter kettle.

Science & Nature Related
  • West Virginia Wildlife Center in French Creek - Where one can watch deer, elk, bison, bears, mountain lions, timber wolves, boars and snakes in their natural habitat. This zoological facility is also home to birds including wild turkeys. Picnic facilities and food available.
